A big molecule established from recurring subunits (a polymer of acrylic acid) that magically converts a liquid right into a good gel formula.  It usually has to be neutralized with a foundation (including sodium hydroxide) for your thickening to take place and it makes viscous, clear gels that also really feel wonderful and non-tacky on the skin
